Child has Thyroid Issues

Postby BlossomLeela » Tue Jul 27, 2010 11:08 am

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forums, so I figured I'd jump into the conversation. Basically, my son of 10 years has been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder (that's the only information my doctor gave me -- seriously.) Anyway, I was told my son had a thyroid disorder . . . one which will cause major problems when he progressively gets older. Apparently, it's a condition that will essentially keep him from reaching puberty.

After hearing all of this, I totally freaked out and started searching for an answer to this issue. I would have asked more questions then, during the doctor visit, but I was in a state of shock. Anyway, I started looking for the actual, technical definition for this condition and I haven't been able to find an answer. I'm supposed to bring my son back to the doctor next week, but I want answers now -- that way I know what to expect. Has anyone experienced this same issue or are they experiencing it with their son or daughter now? I really could use some help. :(

You need to know what "thyroid disorder" the doctor is talking about. It could be Hashimoto's, which is the autoimmune form of hypothyroidism, or it would be just plain hypothyroidism, or it could be Grave's Disease, which causes hyperthyroidism. I'd call the office and request a complete copy of your son's labs, now. Legally, they have to give to them to you. I know of no thyroid disorder that would prevent puberty. Certainly being hypothyroid can cause slow growth. Start with the labs. When you get them, you can just add them to this thread and we'll go from there. Please be sure to post the ranges along with the actual lab results.
